Week beginning - 18th May 2020

Hi Emeralds and Sapphires, welcome to another week of learning from home.

We hope you all had a lovely weekend. Our message stays the same, whatever you can get done is enough.

This week we will continue our phonics learning with our ‘Letters and Sounds’ lessons on YouTube. For our maths we will be learning about capacity and you could even do some estimation – this involves water play! Our writing activity is all about the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’

Have a great week!

Writing

Begin by reading the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. If you do not have the story at home, you can find an animated version here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY

Throughout the book/video allow your child the time to make predictions during the book.  Encourage your child to clarify their thinking ‘why do you think that?’

After the story discuss these questions with your child:-

  • What happens in The Very Hungry Caterpillar story?
  • What foods does the caterpillar eat?
  • What is your favourite food?

This week’s writing task is to write a list of the foods the hungry caterpillar ate.

Please find a letter from the butterfly that is uploaded below. Once you have read the letter to your child discuss the questions below together.

  • Can you write a shopping list?
  • What would you like to write?
  • What letter sounds can you hear?
  • Can you write the letter/word…?
  • How do we write the sound …?
  • Can you tell me about your list?
  • What else might the caterpillars like to eat?

If your child would like an extra challenge, can they write a similar story about a 'very hungry' animal?

  • What happens to it?
  • What food does it eat?
  • What happens at the end of the story?

Phonics

Please continue with the ‘Letters and Sounds’ YouTube lessons. Follow the link below to the YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP_FbjYUP_UtldV2K_-niWw/featured

New lessons will be uploaded every weekday, and will be available to watch, throughout the summer term. Daily lesson upload times are:

10am - Reception - Most suitable for children who can blend and read words such as 'fish', 'chat' and 'rain'

10:30am - Year 1 - Most suitable for children who can confidently blend and read words such as 'stamp', 'chair' and 'green'

11am - Learning to Blend - extra blending practise for children in Reception and Year 1.

The link below talks you through how it works, what to expect and how to support:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8C8BCB4hvc

As it states in the video if your child is finding the Reception lesson a bit tricky and they are not yet blending confidently, then please watch the ‘Learning to Blend’ lesson to support them with this skill. Similarly if your child is very confident with the skills and knowledge covered in the Reception lesson, they could watch and participate in the Year 1 lesson too.

Maths

This week we are going to be learning about capacity. Capacity is how much of something an object can fit inside it. We are going to be finding out the capacity of different sized containers by filling them with water!

You will need to have around 5 different containers of different sizes (you can use more or fewer depending on what you have). These could be anything from milk bottles, bowls, buckets, yoghurt pots – or anything you have at home. You are going to use a cup to fill each of the containers up to the top to find out which one holds the most water, or has the biggest capacity. Record what you find out. You could also estimate how many cups you think it will take to fil each container!

You could do this activity in the garden if you have the space, in the kitchen by the sink or perhaps even at bath time!
