Week Beginning - 4th May 2020

Welcome back Emeralds and Sapphires, the weather last week wasn’t as good as we have had but we hope you have managed to get out and have some exercise as well as do some activities indoors. We have been keeping ourselves busy. Mr Thompson has been doing some baking and made a very yummy carrot cake and Mrs Butler has been busy potting lots of plants in her garden. Miss Ray has been making chocolate cupcakes with her girls and walking her dog and Miss Woods has been doing lots of exercise, trying to keep healthy.

For our writing activity this week we are going to be writing some facts about minibeasts – perhaps ones that you found on your minibeast hunt a couple of weeks ago. For our maths learning we are going to be playing a game, learning about taking away. For our phonics this week will be continuing with our new ‘Letters and Sounds’ lessons on YouTube. We hope you are enjoying them – Mr Thompson is doing them too with his son!

We are missing you all and hope to see you very soon. Have a lovely week!

Writing

What is your favourite minibeast?

What would you like to find out?

Where does your favourite insect live?

What do they like to eat?

This video may help you answer some of your questions about minibeasts such as ants, bees, beetles and many more… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuHg5oWF_mo

Can you make some fact cards like the ladybird one uploaded below?

Draw your favourite insects and write some facts that you have learnt. The  Minibeast Fact Cards uploaded below are there to help you.

Phonics

Last week was the first week of the new ‘Letters and Sounds’ lessons on YouTube. We hope that you have found them useful. We would like you to continue with these this week but we but would like to stress that it is not essential for you to do the whole lesson every day if your child is finding it difficult to concentrate. These are difficult times and at no point do we want to be causing any added stress or anxiety.

Please follow the link below to the YouTube channel:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP_FbjYUP_UtldV2K_-niWw/featured

New lessons will be uploaded every weekday, and will be available to watch, throughout the summer term. Daily lesson upload times are:

10am - Reception - Most suitable for children who can blend and read words such as 'fish', 'chat' and 'rain'

10:30am - Year 1 - Most suitable for children who can confidently blend and read words such as 'stamp', 'chair' and 'green'

11am - Learning to Blend - extra blending practise for children in Reception and Year 1.

The link below talks you through how it works, what to expect and how to support:

As it states in the video if your child is finding the Reception lesson a bit tricky and they are not yet blending confidently, then please watch the ‘Learning to Blend’ lesson to support them with this skill. Similarly if your child is very confident with the skills and knowledge covered in the Reception lesson, they could watch and participate in the Year 1 lesson too.

Maths

This week we are going to be learning about taking away. Can you find 6 or more objects. Roll a dice and take that number away from the group. How many do you have left? Repeat this as many times as you can. Can you say your number sentence each time, for example “7 take away 3 equals 4”. You could also record your number sentences, writing them down, for example 7 – 3 = 4, 10 – 5 = 5.

You can use any objects you like, toy cars, lego, duplo, play food or anything else, it’s up to you!

A little extra

In honour of the NHS  John Lewis and Waitrose have launched a design a superhero bear competition for children. The winning entry will have their design made into a teddy that will be sold later this year with 100% of the profits going to the NHS.

The entry date is 5pm on 8th May.

This is just a little extra, follow the link below if you would like to take part.

We hope you have a lovely week. You are doing brilliantly and we are very proud of you all!
