Week Beginning - 30th March 2020

Hello Emeralds and Sapphires!

Here are our activities for this week of working from home.

Phonics

This week for our phonics we will be consolidating our knowledge of the tricky words we have learnt so far. Tricky words are words that you can’t use your sounds to sound out the whole word, therefore please encourage your child to use the letter names to support the spelling of these words, e.g. “a- r-e spells are”. We use our finger to point to each letter and then swipe our finger across and say the word.

It is up to you how you divide up the activity, we have suggested doing four words each day below. Please practise spelling and writing (in cursive, using Langshott script) the following tricky words:

Monday: I, the, no, of

Tuesday: to, into, go, all

Wednesday: all, are, she, he

Thursday: you, we, me, was

Friday: my, be, they, little

We like to play a game of tricky word bingo at school – you could play at home. Draw lines to divide a piece of paper in quarters. Your child can write a tricky word of their choice in each quarter. Then call out some tricky words – when they have crossed off all the words they have written they shout ‘bingo’.

Maths

This week we are learning about finding one more and one less.

Use the number line below to talk about the numbers becoming one more as we count forwards and one less as we count backwards.

Select a number – What is one more? What is one less?

These YouTube videos further demonstrate one more and one less using a number line.

More than challenges

Collect some small objects, such as play people or building bricks. Ask a grown-up to count out some of the objects and say how many they have. Can you count out one more than that number? Can you use the number line to check? Which way on the number line do you need to go – right or left?

Collect some pebbles or leaves from outside. Once you have 7, stop and work out what one more is. Collect another object and see if you were right. Can you use the number line to check? Which way on the number line do you need to go – right or left? Each time you collect a new one, count on one to find the answer. Can you collect 20?

Less than challenges

Can you count out some objects around the home – how many would one less be? How many would one more be? How can you check? Can you use the number line to check? Which way on the number line do you need to go – right or left? Can you take one away and count, or put one back and count to check your answer.

Count out a set of 20 toys into a cardboard box. The cardboard box is going to be a bus to take the toys on a journey. Move the box around the room and each time the bus stops, a toy gets off the bus. Count how many toys are left each time until the bus is empty. Can you use the number line to check? Which way on the number line do you need to go – right or left?
