Week Beginning - 27th April 2020

Welcome back Emeralds and Sapphires, we hope that you’ve had a super weekend and enjoyed the sunshine. It makes such a difference and puts a smile on our faces – we hope it does with you too.

Continuing with our minibeast topic, our writing activity this week is going to be about the story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ by Julia Donaldson. For our maths learning we are going to be practising our number formation. Our Phonics this week will be slightly different and you will be getting to watch and join in with a new phonics lesson each day on YouTube – very exciting!

We are missing you all and hope to see you very soon. Have a lovely week!

Writing

In the story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ a very clever ladybird has a plan to stop two naughty thieves from stealing the farm’s prize cow.

If you do not have this book at home, here is a link for the story.

For our writing activity this week we are going to design a notice to warn local farmers that cow thieves have been in the area! You might want to include:

  • A description of the thieves
  • Details of what the thieves were looking for on the farm
  • Ideas to help the farmers make sure they keep their animals secure

At school, the children are encouraged to be as independent as possible. One of the ways the children show this is to use a sound mat to support them with their writing. Please see a copy of the sound mat below which your child will be very familiar with.

Phonics

Starting today (Monday 27th April) there is a new ‘Letters and Sounds for home and school’ channel on YouTube. This resource is designed by experts for use by parents, carers and teachers during the Covid-19 period, funded by the Department for Education.

Please follow the link below to the YouTube channel:

New lessons will be uploaded every weekday, and will be available to watch, throughout the summer term. Daily lesson upload times are:

  • 10am - Reception - Most suitable for children who can blend and read words such as 'fish', 'chat' and 'rain'
  • 10:30am - Year 1 - Most suitable for children who can confidently blend and read words such as 'stamp', 'chair' and 'green'
  • 11am - Learning to Blend - extra blending practise for children in Reception and Year 1.

The link below talks you through how it works, what to expect and how to support:

As it states in the video if your child is finding the Reception lesson a bit tricky and they are not yet blending confidently, then please watch the ‘Learning to Blend’ lesson to support them with this skill. Similarly if your child is very confident with the skills and knowledge covered in the Reception lesson, they could watch and participate in the Year 1 lesson too.

Maths

This week we are going to be practising forming our numbers correctly. It is important that we take our time and write the numbers around the correct way. Remember – it’s not a race and it’s not a rush! Please practise writing numbers 0 – 20. Our number rhymes for 0 – 10 will help you. There is also a number line attached below to support you.

0 – Zoom in a circle like a hero, this is the way we make a zero

1 – Top to bottom then we’re done, this is the way we make a one.

2 – A curl for me and a line for you, this is the way we make a two.

3 – A curl for you and a curl for me, this is the way we make a three.

4 – Down and across and then one more, this is the way we make a four.

5 – Hat on top, take a dive, add a curl and that’s a five.

6 – Stir it around, give it a mix, this is the way we make a six.

7 – Across and down, so easy it’s heaven, this is the way we make a seven.

8 – Make an ‘S’ and close the gate, this is the way we make an eight.

9 – All the way round and then a line, this is the way we make a nine.

10 – Top to bottom, round again, this is the way we make a ten.

A little extra

As well as the new ‘Letters and Sounds for home and school’ channel on YouTube, you may have heard that the government have set up Oak National Academy which has some teacher led sessions each day for every year group.  For many of you the weekly tasks that we are setting on the website will be enough but if you would like further ideas for home learning, you may like to visit https://www.thenational.academy.
